He was just a 12-year-old boy playing with a plastic gun

Tamir Rice was a 12-year-old African-American boy who was fatally shot by a Cleveland police officer on November 22, 2014. The incident sparked outrage and protests across the United States, and raised questions about police use of force and racial bias in law enforcement – nothing new. Tamir Rice is just one of many people killed by police. However, one of the youngest.

Tamir Rice was playing with a toy gun in a park when a police car pulled up and two officers, Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, approached him. Within seconds of arriving on the scene, Officer Loehmann shot Tamir Rice, who died the following day.

The case was controversial from the beginning, with some arguing that the officers should have taken more time to assess the situation before using deadly force. Others argued that the officers had no choice but to act quickly, given the perceived threat, which apparently was a toy.

In 2015, a grand jury declined to indict the officers involved in the shooting. However, in 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it would not file federal criminal charges against the officers, but did find a "pattern or practice" of excessive force within the Cleveland Police Department.

The case of Tamir Rice continues to be a rallying point for those advocating for police reform and racial justice in the United States. It serves as a reminder of the need for police officers to be better trained in de-escalation techniques and to confront their own implicit biases.
