Another young victim

Andy Lopez was a 13-year-old Mexican-American boy who was fatally shot by a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy on October 22, 2013, in Santa Rosa, California. The shooting sparked protests and raised questions about police use of force, racial profiling, and the militarization of law enforcement.

Andy Lopez was walking in his neighborhood with a replica AK-47 rifle that he had borrowed from a friend when a sheriff's deputy, Erick Gelhaus, pulled up behind him in his patrol car. According to Gelhaus, he repeatedly ordered Lopez to drop the weapon, but Lopez turned towards him and Gelhaus fired eight shots,

The case was controversial from the beginning, with some arguing that the shooting was justified given the perceived threat of the replica gun, while others argued that the officer should have taken more time to assess the situation before using deadly force.

In 2014, the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office announced that it would not file criminal charges against Gelhaus, citing the officer's belief that Lopez posed an imminent threat. However, in 2016, the county agreed to a $3 million settlement with Lopez's family.

The case of Andy Lopez has been seen as part of a broader national conversation about police use of force, especially in cases involving children and people of color. It has also raised concerns about the role of law enforcement in communities and the need for better training and oversight.
