BLM and entertainment
Шn this short post we
will look at some dramatic changes brough by Black Lives Matter movement to entertainment
sector.
As we have covered in
our previous post such a great movie as “Gone With The Wind” got cancelled under
the premise of promoting racial inequality and white supremacism. But what
else, it can’t be just one old movie, right?
TV series “Cops” were
dumped after 31 years of broadcasting.[1]
Many companies like Netflix and Amazon launched campaigns to promote black
actors. Netflix created a special Black Lives Matter section of films and
documentaries so viewers can "learn more about racial injustice and the
Black experience in America.[2]
On the other hand Amazon Prime has its own section called "Black History,
Hardship & Hope," with films including Just Mercy starring Michael B.
Johnson and Jamie Foxx based on the true story of a black man appealing his
murder conviction.
BLM movement had also influenced
the bookshelves. Books by black authors, White Fragility for example - have
also shot up the bestseller lists.[3]
In terms of music
there were also some changes. Republic Records, a Universal label that is home
to the Canadian stars Drake and The Weeknd, was the first to stop using the
word, with the Grammys following their lead by replacing its "urban
music" awards section with "R&B progressive."[4]
To sump up, BLM had a
massive effect on entertainment sector and still does. But will this support
stay for long? Time will show.
