George Floyd Protests and Covid-19 Transmission

The George Floyd protests were held protests in all 50 states and D.C., including in hundreds of smaller, lesser-known towns and cities that have not been in the spotlight during previous nationwide protests. One of the biggest concerns was that this shoulder to shoulder activity could increase the number of people getting Covid-19.

As we have established, the media intends to protect the cause as vehemently as possible. So, most news articles by mainstream media outlets only warned of a surge in the number of people contracting the virus , yet never really published any follow ups to the articles. The problem with this is that there was a lot to follow up on: many researchers would later find out that the protests did cause a surge in the number of people who got Covid-19.

According to the New York Times, outdoor transmission of the virus is rare (yet it’s still frowned upon when people celebrate the 4th of July with their family). Conditions at the demonstrations, the NYT states, may not have been conducive for transmission, mainly because the protests occurred outdoors.

Moreover, most protesters were conscious enough to wear masks (which even dr. Fauci said were of no use). One of the claims that the NYT make is that one of the protesters tried to wear a mask except when he was delivering a speech or leading chants — during which time he tried to keep his six feet of distance from others.
