Celebrities and BLM
Without any doubts celebrities are very influential people. They create trends that people all around the world follow. For some, they become life-changing idols whom they admire. Even if a celebrity expresses a negative reaction on something, it still receives more public attention and may find support in other’s eyes. Ever since BLM appeared famous people, however mostly politician, did not hesitate to speak out on this topic. With social media gaining more and more popularity, celebrities tend to comment on everything that happens in the world. Sometimes they do not even understand everything completely, but they post it, just to be in trend. They sometimes are judged because they do not speak out, so they choose to.
One of the social media flash mobs that was trending on Instagram was that users had to post a black square. The event was named “Blackout Tuesday”. Emma Watson, we all know her for her role as Hermione Granger, did not fall behind. The squares flooded the resource-filles #BlackLivesMatter hashtag. However, Watson hadn’t said anything publicly before posting the three squares.
Billie Eilish also participated by uploading a long text where she explained why using the statement “All Lives Matter” is a mistake. Pink, an even more popular singer, supported Eilish and reposted her message.
Lea Michele tweeted #BlackLivesMatter and her colleagues found it aggressive. They described her action as traumatic and overall did not appreciate what she did.
“EnoughIsEnough” and “Let’s Get Loud for Black Lives Matter” are home-made signs which were made my Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s kids. They took part in LA’s peaceful protests after Floyd’s death.
Ariana Grande is a singer who went through something terrible on her concert and that made a huge impact on her. She is very active when it comes to the issue of a personal safety and people’s lives and fairness. She was seen at several BLM protests and shared various resources which encourage people to speak out against police brutality.
Overall, we can see that celebrities tend to participate in flesh mobs to protect human lives. Some, however, share criticism. Another thing we know for sure is that social media post will not restore the lost lives and will not help those in need.
