The consequences of defunding the police

In 2020 many cities vowed to defund the police and did that. The Austin City Council voted to cut its police budget by $150 million and reinvest the money in social services.[1] The same thing did Seattle City Council.[2] This initiative was then supported hugely, more than 20 cities cut down the police budget in some way.[3]

But what did it result in?

Many people who are independent voters from lower, middle, and upper classes who live in the suburbs or apartment blocks have somewhat reasonable cohesion between their neighbors, some of them have friendly relations and with some of them they are tense. Anyway, majority of population[4] does not support the idea of defunding the police. When the democratic party officially supports the idea of defunding the police that alienate many independent voters.

The other effect that was caused by cut in a police budget is that gun-sale skyrocketed in 2020[5] and remained high in 2021 comparing to previous years. People feel unsafe when the government defunds the police and decide to count on their own. The citizen patrol organizations were expanded or creates in many cities to protect neighborhoods with families and small businesses.[6] [7] [8] [9]

The truckers will not take contracts to cities which disbanded or defunded the police.[10]

To conclude, defund the police is not a popular idea among the population, it meets the needs of radical left. It is not only unpopular but unrealistic and it harms the entire social structure.

In our next post we will cover today condition of the police.
