Politicians’ reaction to Trayvon Martin’s murder and how political parties differ in their opinions.
Trayvon Martin’s murder caused a great public outcry.
The atmosphere in the city of Sanford was very polarized as the trial went on. Being
a very subtle topic, major political figures did not hesitate to speak out.
Obama rarely rises racial issues in his speeches. But
this time he also decided to say a word: "Obviously, this is a tragedy. I
can only imagine what these parents are going through". Obama also paid
attention to the tragic experience, history and pain that African American community
has gone through. The president talked about the discrimination African
American “folks” come across in a daily life. How incredulous they seem to
white people and how wrong and unfair it is to be afraid of colored people. However,
Obama mentions some progress the younger generation has done on the race issue.
Donald Trump, being “the least racist person that you’ve
ever encountered”, according to his own words, said that Trayvor’s murder was a
terrible loss. He also said in a CNN interview that something had to be done
very quickly.
The case, however, revealed the two political Americas.
There was a poll in which people were asked if they approved of the jury’s
decision on George Zimmerman killing Trayvon Martin. The very minority (22%) of
the Democratic political party said that they approved of Zimmerman’s
acquittal. Whereas, 65% of Republican respondents said that they didn’t approve
of it.
